英屬印度諸省

在印度次大陸，歷史上官方根據統治的需要以「省」（Presidencies and provinces）名作為一級行政區存在的時間，從1858年英國東印度公司開始，到1950年印度憲法頒布生效不到一百年。1947年印度獨立，印巴分治分治後，在印度共和國，作為一級行政區存在的時間僅三年，其區劃調整幅度不大，之後撤省建立邦和中央直轄區，故實際上在印度共和國，省僅為英屬印度時期的行政區劃。在巴基斯坦，其直屬中央政府的一級行政區一直沿用原有省名，區劃調整不大。

自1612年英國在蘇拉特建立第一個貿易據點開始，整個17世紀英國人控制了擴展到占據印度次大陸三個沿海海岸，包括孟買、金奈和加爾各答，這三個城市都是當時的東印度公司（即之後的英屬印度）管轄區（或稱省）的行政中心，三大管區均設有行政長官即省長，其中孟加拉省（孟加拉管區）省長成為後來的印度總督。這些省份都是通過戰爭手段擴大的領土，19世紀中葉推行所謂的「無嗣失權」（Doctrine of lapse）政策，印度總督在土邦王公去世沒有直系繼承的情況下，獲得部分土地，至此英屬印度諸省覆蓋約印度次大陸一半的面積，區內人口達到次大陸人口60％。這些地區具體由總督指定的省長、副省長、高級專員、專員和行政官員領導，接受英國為宗主國的當地王公繼續實行自治的土邦制度。

英屬印度諸省

• 馬德拉斯省（Madras Presidency），成立於1640年。
• 孟買管轄區（Bombay Presidency），1687年東印度公司駐地從蘇拉特遷至孟買。
• 孟加拉省（Bengal Presidency），成立於1690年，1830年海峽殖民地檳榔嶼成爲其府治，1832年遷至石叻埠（新加坡），1851年海峽殖民地脫離其管轄。
• 海峽殖民地（Straits Settlement），成立於1826年11月27日，早期由加爾各答政府管轄，1830年檳榔嶼成為孟加拉省的府治，1832年首府遷至石叻埠（新加坡），1851年脫離英屬印度管轄。
• 阿傑米爾-梅爾華拉省（Ajmer-Merwara），成立於1818年。
• 庫格省（Coorg），成立於1834年。
• 西北省（North-Western Provinces），成立於1835年。
• 旁遮普省（Punjab），成立於1849年。
• 那格浦爾省（Nagpur Province），成立於1853年。
• 中央省（Central Provinces），1861年自那格浦爾省和薩格爾-納爾布達屬地（Saugor and Nerbudda）析置。
• 緬甸省（Burma），1862年置省。1937年後英屬緬甸成為獨立的殖民地。
• 阿薩姆省（Assam），1874年自孟加拉省析置。
• 安達曼-尼科巴群島，1875年置省。
• 俾路支斯坦省，1887年置省。
• 西北邊境省，1901年自旁遮普省析置。
• 東孟加拉省（East Bengal），1905年—1912年自孟加拉省析置。
• 比哈爾和奧里薩省（Bihar、Orissa），1912年自孟加拉省析置，初名「比哈爾和奧里薩省」，1935年更名為「比哈爾省」。
• 德里省（Delhi），1912年自旁遮普省析置。
• 奧里薩省（Orissa），1935年自比哈爾省析置。
• 亞丁省 (Aden），1932年自孟買省析置。
• 信德省（Sind province），1935年自孟買省析置。
• 潘特-皮普羅達省（Panth-Piploda），1942年建省，為土邦王公放棄的領地。

管轄區城市

管轄區城市（Presidency city）在英屬印度共有3個：加爾各答、孟買和馬德拉斯。

它們的管轄區分別稱為孟加拉管轄區、孟買管轄區和馬德拉斯管轄區。在英國人統治初期，它們在英國東印度公司的直接控制之下；1857年以後，則直接屬於維多利亞女王及其繼任的英國君主。
