- Development
- The sitelink section has been reworked. This will go live on Wikidata on Tuesday. The sitelinks will then be slimmer and they will appear in a sidebar on the right side if there is enough space.
- More performance improvements when parsing an item page, ~%15 faster for some pages :)
- Titan was selected as the graph DB to implement a Wikidata query service running in production
- Fixed adding links to ru.wikinews.org which was broken by its change to HTTPS-only
- Worked on redesigning the header area (label, description, alias, in-other-languages box)
- Polished d:Wikidata:Data access and d:Wikidata:Database download. Could still use some more work though if you have time.
- Enabled PHP_CodeSniffer with Mediawiki rules and some additional ones to make us aware of more code issues
- We no longer log some common 404 errors in the exception log

- Official Wikipedia app now uses Wikidata descriptions \o/ More to come!
- Usage tracking will likely be deployed on February 2 on Wikidata. This will not be user-visible. It just means that pages using data from arbitrary items get updated/purged when the data changes. Arbitrary access is being tested at Test Wikidata and testwiki:Test Wiki. An example is at testwiki:Kitten on arbitrary page.
- Assigning items on Mix'n'match will now make that change on Wikidata for you automatically

- You will now see when a language fallback for a label is used on an item or property. The language name will be shown next to it.
- Automatic descriptions for Wikidata items by Magnus
- The templates for adding badges (good article, featured article, etc) to articles on Wikipedia in the sidebar are getting removed from articles rapidly in favor of getting that information from Wikidata \o/ German Wikipedia even deleted those templates already. English Wikipedia seems to be getting close.

- Newest properties: Journalisted ID, Biography at the Bundestag of Germany, Metacritic ID
- Newest WikiProjects: Identical Twins

- We are hiring! Passionate about Wikidata and know your way around Java Script and co? Apply!
- We'll spend the next week working with Nik and Stas from WMF to move queries forward in Berlin
- Worked on implementing a Lua interface for arbitrary Snak rendering. This can be used to render eg. qualifiers or references in Wikipedia infoboxes.
- Did groundwork for Lua convenience functions that render data in the user’s interface language, rather than the content language (for multilingual wikis, like Commons or Wikidata only)
- Did further work on making the Lua interface code nicer and share code with the parser functions
- Removed input method selector in the sitelink input as it was hiding the actual input and not very useful there
- Fixed some issues in diff views showing new data instead of old data
- Created a few scripts to make it easier for 3rd parties to install Wikibase
- Fixed icinga notification that tests if dispatch lag gets high
- Investigated several issues regarding storage of time values and started fixing them
- Fixed editing of qualifiers
- Fixed most browser tests after introduction of new header design

With Citoid in VisualEditor, you click the 'book with bookmark' icon and paste in the URL for a reliable source:
Citoid looks up the source for you and returns the citation results. Click the green "Insert" button to accept its results and add them to the article:
After inserting the citation, you can change it. Select the reference, and click the "Edit" button in the context menu to make changes.
The user guide has more information about how to use VisualEditor.
Since the last newsletter, the Editing Team has fixed many bugs and worked on VisualEditor's performance, the Citoid reference service, and support for languages with complex input requirements. Status reports are posted on Mediawiki.org. The worklist for April through June is available in Phabricator.
The weekly task triage meetings continue to be open to volunteers, each Wednesday at 11:00 (noon) PDT (18:00 UTC). You do not need to attend the meeting to nominate a bug for consideration as a Q4 blocker. Instead, go to Phabricator and "associate" the Editing team's Q4 blocker project with the bug. Learn how to join the meetings and how to nominate bugs at mw:Talk:VisualEditor/Portal.
Recent improvements
VisualEditor is now substantially faster. In many cases, opening the page in VisualEditor is now faster than opening it in the wikitext editor. The new system has improved the code speed by 37% and network speed by almost 40%.
The Editing team is slowly adding auto-fill features for citations. This is currently available only at the French, Italian, and English Wikipedias. The Citoid service takes a URL or DOI for a reliable source, and returns a pre-filled, pre-formatted bibliographic citation. After creating it, you will be able to change or add information to the citation, in the same way that you edit any other pre-existing citation in VisualEditor. Support for ISBNs, PMIDs, and other identifiers is planned. Later, editors will be able to improve precision and reduce the need for manual corrections by contributing to the Citoid service's definitions for each website.
Citoid requires good TemplateData for your citation templates. If you would like to request this feature for your wiki, please post a request in the Citoid project on Phabricator. Include links to the TemplateData for the most important citation templates on your wiki.
The special character inserter has been improved, based upon feedback from active users. After this, VisualEditor was made available to all users of Wikipedias on the Phase 5 list on 30 March. This affected 53 mid-size and smaller Wikipedias, including Afrikaans, Azerbaijani, Breton, Kyrgyz, Macedonian, Mongolian, Tatar, and Welsh.
Work continues to support languages with complex requirements, such as Korean and Japanese. These languages use input method editors ("IMEs”). Recent improvements to cursoring, backspace, and delete behavior will simplify typing in VisualEditor for these users.
The design for the image selection process is now using a "masonry fit" model. Images in the search results are displayed at the same height but at variable widths, similar to bricks of different sizes in a masonry wall, or the "packed" mode in image galleries. This style helps you find the right image by making it easier to see more details in images.
You can now drag and drop categories to re-arrange their order of appearance on the page.
The pop-up window that appears when you click on a reference, image, link, or other element, is called the "context menu". It now displays additional useful information, such as the destination of the link or the image's filename. The team has also added an explicit "Edit" button in the context menu, which helps new editors open the tool to change the item.
Invisible templates are marked by a puzzle piece icon so they can be interacted with. Users also will be able to see and edit HTML anchors now in section headings.
Users of the TemplateData GUI editor can now set a string as an optional text for the 'deprecated' property in addition to boolean value, which lets you tell users of the template what they should do instead. (T90734)
Looking ahead
The special character inserter in VisualEditor will soon use the same special character list as the wikitext editor. Admins at each wiki will also have the option of creating a custom section for frequently used characters at the top of the list. Instructions for customizing the list will be posted at mediawiki.org.
The team is discussing a test of VisualEditor with new users at the English Wikipedia, to see whether they have met their goals of making VisualEditor suitable for those editors. The timing is unknown, but might be relatively soon. (T90666)

- We are going to change the way value suggestions are ranked when entering a new statement. This will help with "male" and "female" not showing up among the top suggestions. Previously we ranked by number of sitelinks. We will change this to the maximum of sitelinks and labels. So if an item has labels in many languages but no sitelinks like "male" and "female" it will still show up high in the suggestions. (phabricator:T94404)
- Discussed how to move forward with identifiers. Outcome: They should get their own datatype. (phabricator:T95287)
- Implemented arbitrary access for the {{#property:…}} parser function. This can be invoked on the wikis that have arbitrary access enabled by using {{#property:P123|from=Q42}}. So far this is only Wikidata itself.
- Did further performance work on the client (Wikipedia and co) in preparation for arbitrary access
- Improved the performance of wbgetentities significantly when loading a large number of entities

- Hi Elitre (WMF), sorry for my late reply. I didn't have much tech background, I post the edit because I read Asaf posted a message of James Forrester(https://www{{.}}facebook{{.}}com/groups/wikimedia.asia/permalink/396864953771704/) into Wikimedia Asia Forum, then I translate the text and ask for advice for the proper place to inform the Chinese Wikipedia community about this message in the (https://www{{.}}facebook{{.}}com/groups/tw.wiki/permalink/382693958585049/ Taiwan Wikipedia facebook group). People who are familiar with the tech support suggest that I go to the Village pump (technical) in Chinese Wikipedia community. I did, and then another long-term Wikipedian add related Chinese page to the phase 6 wikis page. Sorry if what I have done is confusing or made a conflict. Am I making this something out of the blue? - Hey 上官, thanks again for your effort. As I said in my last message, at this stage zh.wiki does not need to be involved (while other zh- languages do). Also, collecting user data on external sites, under Terms of Use which are not WMF ones, is tricky (we should get Legal authorization for that, etc.). Support request with team editing experiment project
Dear tech ambassadors, instead of spamming the Village Pump of each Wikipedia about my tiny project proposal for researching team editing (see here: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:IdeaLab/Research_team_editing), I have decided to leave to your own discretion if the matter is relevant enough to inform a wider audience already. I would appreciate if you could appraise if the Wikipedia community you are more familiar with could have interest in testing group editing "on their own grounds" and with their own guidance. In a nutshell: it consists in editing pages as a group instead of as an individual. This social experiment might involve redefining some aspects of the workflow we are all used to, with the hope of creating a more friendly and collaborative environment since editing under a group umbrella creates less social exposure than traditional "individual editing". I send you this message also as a proof that the Inspire Campaign is already gearing up. As said I would appreciate of *you* just a comment on the talk page/endorsement of my project noting your general perception about the idea. Nothing else. Your contribution helps to shape the future! - We rolled out usage tracking on the first two wikis (French Wikisource and Dutch Wikipedia). Users should not notice anything. More wikis will follow in the next weeks. This is the remaining step for enabling arbitrary access on wikis other than Commons.
- The students team is working hard to get a first release of the improved constraint reports and checks against 3rd party databases out.
- Ricordisamoa fixed the issue with long descriptions being cut off.
- We fixed the focus flow in the property selector.
- We improved the messages on Special:EntityData to make it more understandable.

- State of the Map US (OpenStreetMap's conference) in New York on 6-8 June
- Wikimedia Hackathon 2015 in Lyon from 23-25 May. Some of the activities and outcomes:
- Wikidata descriptions can be soon be edited in the Wikipedia iOS app.
- A early preview of the official SPARQL endpoint for Wikidata has been created to query Wikidata. Remember that it is not stable and still beta. A short introduction to SPARQL can be found in Lucie's slides.
- If you are not familiar with SPARQL yet, a tool has been created by Tpt and Bene* to generate SPARQL queries from natural language questions.
- To do SPARQL queries from the command line, a command line tool was crafted by Marius.

- The English-language Wikipedia has decided to deprecate Persondata in favour of Wikidata.

- The results are in for the Wikimedia Foundation's board election. One name should sound familiar to you ;-)
- Addshore created new maps of the geocoordinates on Wikidata. More coming.
- Sylvain made an overview of the overlap in topics that the biggest Wikipedias have.
- Wikidata has passed German Wikipedia in number of items with images (743850 dewp articles vs. 804885 items) - now only second to English-language Wikipedia.
- Catalan Wikipedia is moving Taxon IDs to Wikidata.
- Zolo did a comparison of English/French/German/Chinese and Cebuano Wikipedias in terms of main types of articles. Biographies were compared by period, nationality and occupation.

- Italian Wikipedia and all remaining Wikisource projects now have arbitrary access. The rollout will continue. The schedule for the next projects is at d:Wikidata:Arbitrary access.
- The Content Translation tool now automatically connects translated articles to Wikidata. (Thanks Content Translation developers!) Previously translated but unconnected articles have been connected by a bot. (Thanks Amir!)
- Code review of the extensions written by a team of students to improve the constraint reports and make it possible to automatically check our data against other databases. A first version will go live soon pending further codereview and fixes.
- Two new methods have been added to the lua library provided by Wikibase:
wikibase.resolvePropertyIdandwikibase.entity:getBestStatements. - Further work on making unserializable values editable in the UI (This can happen for example if a property is deleted.)
- Made the Wikidata JSON dumps available on Labs in the standard dumps location there (/public/dumps).
- Worked on automatically creating a redirect when merging items via the API.
- Rewrote the script that generates a map image based on geocoordinates in Wikidata. (Result see above.)
- Released Wikibase DataModel 3.0

VisualEditor News #3—2015

Auto-fill features for citations are available at a few Wikipedias through the citoid service. Citoid takes a URL or DOI for a reliable source, and returns a pre-filled, pre-formatted bibliographic citation. If Citoid is enabled on your wiki, then the design of the citation workflow changed during May. All citations are now created inside a single tool. Inside that tool, choose the tab you want (⧼citoid-citeFromIDDialog-mode-auto⧽, ⧼citoid-citeFromIDDialog-mode-manual⧽, or ⧼citoid-citeFromIDDialog-mode-reuse⧽). The cite button is now labeled with the word "⧼visualeditor-toolbar-cite-label⧽" rather than a book icon, and the autofill citation dialog now has a more meaningful label, "⧼Citoid-citeFromIDDialog-lookup-button⧽", for the submit button.
The link tool has been redesigned based on feedback from Wikipedia editors and user testing. It now has two separate sections: one for links to articles and one for external links. When you select a link, its pop-up context menu shows the name of the linked page, a thumbnail image from the linked page, Wikidata's description, and appropriate icons for disambiguation pages, redirect pages and empty pages (where applicable). Search results have been reduced to the first five pages. Several bugs were fixed, including a dark highlight that appeared over the first match in the link inspector. (T98085)
The special character inserter in VisualEditor now uses the same special character list as the wikitext editor. Admins at each wiki can also create a custom section for frequently used characters at the top of the list. Please read the instructions for customizing the list at mediawiki.org. Also, there is now a tooltip to describing each character in the special character inserter. (T70425)
Several improvements have been made to templates. When you search for a template to insert, the list of results now contains descriptions of the templates. The parameter list inside the template dialog now remains open after inserting a parameter from the list, so that users don’t need to click on "⧼visualeditor-dialog-transclusion-add-param⧽" each time they want to add another parameter. (T95696) The team added a new property for TemplateData, "示例值", for template parameters. This optional, translatable property will show up when there is text describing how to use that parameter. The design of the main toolbar and several other elements have changed slightly, to be consistent with the MediaWiki theme. In the Vector skin, individual items in the menu are separated visually by pale gray bars. Buttons and menus on the toolbar can now contain both an icon and a text label, rather than just one or the other. This new design feature is being used for the cite button on wikis where the Citoid service is enabled.
The team has released a long-desired improvement to the handling of non-existent images. If a non-existent image is linked in an article, then it is now visible in VisualEditor and can be selected, edited, replaced, or removed.

- Switched the whole code base to make use of DataModel 3.0
- The concept of “claims” no longer exists in Wikibase, as all places in the software work with statements. We are making this more and more explicit in the code.
- The autoloading mechanism of the extension changed, see phabricator:T100813
- More work on getting the Wikibase Quality extensions ready for deployment. They'll improve constraint checking and provide checks against 3rd party databases.
- Special:UnconnectedPages had to be reworked (thanks Amir!) because of huge performance issues. Because of this it loses some functionality (being able to specify where the list starts and limiting the list to pages that have local interwiki links). We're working on bringing functionality back without the performance penalty.
- Bene* created a SPARQL abstraction layer for PHP called Asparagus: https://github.com/Benestar/asparagus
- Enabled arbitrary access on arwiki, cawiki, eswiki, huwiki, kowiki, rowiki, ukwiki, viwiki, and usage tracking on dewiki, ruwiki, cswiki and all s3 wikis. (ruwiki and cswiki get arbitrary access on June 23)
- Finishing work on improved handling “invalid” values and statements with deleted properties.
- Small breaking DOM change: Wikibase no longer adds its own h1 tag but uses MediaWiki's default .firstHeading element. (phabricator:T93534)

I don't know how much the zh.wiki community is aware of the upcoming API changes which may break some bots, user scripts etc. I have therefore prepared a sort of TL;DR which I hope you can translate to zh, and will also post a longer explanation in English. This is the message to translate:
Hi everybody. Apologies for using English for most of this message. Next week, a major change will happen to Wikimedia APIs. This update has been planned, discussed and announced for years, but I wanted to make sure you got yet another announcement about it, because it will reach the wikis since 30 June 2015, and if affected bots, gadgets and user scripts on this wikis are not updated, they will stop working. No reasons to panic, though :) Please just make sure that bot writers/maintainers see the message below. Thank you, (long explanation in English follows)

They are listed directly in Wikidata's recent deaths report.

Early invitation: join VisualEditor's 2015 Translathon
Hello!
You are invited to join the 2nd edition of the VisualEditor Translathon! It is a translation rally, focused on interface messages and help pages related to VisualEditor.
In order to participate, you need to sign up on the Translathon page. The top 3 contributors will each win a Wikipedia t-shirt of their choice from the Wikipedia store.[1] Translations made between July 15th and July 19th (CDT time zone) qualify.[2]
If you are attending Wikimania Mexico this year, you are also welcome to join a related sprint during the Hackathon in Workplace 1 - Don Américo, Thursday 16 July at 4:00 p.m (CDT) at the conference venue, so you can meet other fellow translators and get support if you need some.
Interface messages have the priority. You will need to create an account at translatewiki.net in order to work on them, if you don't have one. It is recommended to create the account ASAP, so that it can be manually confirmed in time.
You can also help translate documentation pages about VisualEditor on mediawiki.org. You can use your Wikipedia account there. You will find instructions, links and other details on the Translathon page.

- Moving towards having a single edit button to edit references along with the value they belong to.
- Bene continued working on phasing out the deprecated Entity superclass and making more entity types possible.
- More work on phasing out a deprecated serializer implementation we still use in certain places.
- Further work on the new RDF export.
- PHPCS is now used on each change in Wikibase to ensure the code fulfils certain code quality standards.

- Mix-n-Match got a bunch of new catalogs for you to match up with Wikidata. Currently matching is happening at about 500 items per day. Pretty sweet :)
- @happybirthdayauthors is a new Twitter account posting reading suggestions based on Wikidata data.
- Arbitrary access is rolling out to a large number of wikis over the next two weeks.
- Duplicity can help you match up unlinked Wikipedia articles to a Wikidata item.
- Did you know?
- Development
- Made some small changes to the style of the edit warning and sitelinks so they are easier to notice and understand
- Added error messages for Special:GoToLinkedPage and Special:ItemByTitle so you get a useful message in case no result is found
- The Entity Selector now displays alias in brackets behind label
- The number of entities loaded via the {{#property:…}} parser function and via Lua will be reported in the “Parser profiling data” (which can be found below a page preview or within the Html of a page)
- Prepared for next rounds of arbitrary access rollout
- Investigated growing lag of dispatching of changes to Wikipedia and co. We'll need to investigate further and change things so the lag between an edit on Wikidata and it being send to the Wikipedias and other projects is not too high.
- Added the property ID to Special:ListProperties
- Moved two extensions (Wikidata.org and WikimediaBadges) from Github to Gerrit. More will follow.
- We'd like to drop a database table. Discussion is ongoing.

Your wiki can customize the first section of the special character inserter in VisualEditor. Please follow the instructions at mediawiki.org to put the characters you want at the top. In other changes, if you need to fill in a CAPTCHA and get it wrong, then you can click to get a new one to complete. VisualEditor can now display and edit Vega-based graphs. If you use the Monobook skin, VisualEditor's appearance is now more consistent with other software.

The team will be changing the appearance of selected links inside VisualEditor. The purpose is to make it easy to see whether your cursor is inside or outside the link. When you select a link, the link label (the words shown on the page) will be enclosed in a faint box. If you place your cursor inside the box, then your changes to the link label will be part of the link. If you place your cursor outside the box, then it will not. This will make it easy to know when new characters will be added to the link and when they will not.
On the English Wikipedia, 10% of newly created accounts are now offered both the visual and the wikitext editors. A recent controlled trial showed no significant difference in survival or productivity for new users in the short term. - New tool: Find Wikidata items without an image around a location, then find free images on Flickr taken nearby.
- EventZoom.net extended with OpenStreetMap support, increasing the options for visualizing historical events from Wikidata.

- Soon the edit summary for edits through the API will also contain the automatic edit summary that you are used to for edits done through the website. The summary given by the API user will be appended to the automatic summary. (phabricator:T97247)
- Addressed performance issues in usage tracking updates and had to delay the latest round of rollouts because of it
- Fixed a bug where suggestions would show up twice in item and property selectors (phabricator:T109697)
- Improved performance of the mw.wikibase.sitelink Lua method
- More work done on Unit Selector widget
- Started working on the ArticlePlaceholder extension
- Made final changes so we can redirect mobile users to the mobile version by default
- Evaluated the remaining steps to get the extension deployed that lets you do checks against 3rd party databases. Not much left it seems and we'll tackle that in one of the next sprints. Getting the new features deployed for the constraints checks will still take a bit longer.

- A follow-up to the Wikidata for research proposal has begun to be drafted by the University of Haifa and the Museum für Naturkunde Berlin
- Community page for the new SPARQL query service, including a subpage for interesting or illustrative queries, and a board for suggestions and discussions.

- nlwiki has made great progress in getting down the number of articles not connected to Wikidata
- The Museum of Modern Art website now includes Wikidata IDs (example)
- 50.79% of all #Wikidata items have none, one or two statements now. Next month it is likely to be less than half. Good progress!

Here's your quick overview of what has been happening around Wikidata over the last week.

- There are now almost 5000 articles in Czech Wikipedia which include an infobox without parameters, only with data from Wikidata.
- Input request about editing Wikidata from clients like Wikipedia

- Articles without a Wikidata item can now be filtered by category tree. (example for chemists on enwiki)
- Wikidata:Units attempts to list available units and properties they can be used with
