描述Color Photograph of Kaiser Wilhelm II, NPG, 1906, Series 1 No. 3. NPG (Neue Photographische Gesellschaft) of Steglitz in Berlin, Germany.png |
English: Postcard of a real color photograph of Wilhelm II, Emperor of Germany, taken January 25th, 1906 by the NPG (Neue Photographische Gesellschaft) of Steglitz in Berlin. This postcard is labeled Series 1 No. 3.
The NPG opened their studio for color photography in 1905. This was likely the first such studio in the world. Many prominent residents of Berlin had their pictures taken in color. The pictures were taken by the well-known color separation method and printed by Robert Krayn's printing process. As more practical color photography methods become popular (mainly the Autochrome), the NPG stopped their early color photography. Translated excerpt from "Das Bild - Monatsschrift für photographische Kunst", Feb. 1906, detailing Wilhelm being photographed in color: "Portrait shots of the Emperor in colors. The excellent results which the three-color photography system N.P.G brought about in the field portrait photography that the Emperor now applied himself to this system to be recorded in colour. For this purpose, His Majesty went to Monbijou palace on the afternoon of January 25th, where the N.P.G improvised in a skylighted hall lit by daylight a studio with natural and electric light. Over a dozen color photographs were taken in a short span of time and among them were bust portraits as well as whole figures in a sitting and standing posture. For these photographs, the Kaiser had chosen a number of particularly colorful uniforms, which he repeatedly changed in order to test capabilities the N.P.G system. Despite the difficult conditions, all of the recordings were excellent and will are expected to be available for inspection in the N.P.G. showrooms as soon as possible." |
