English: Postcard of a real color photograph of Wilhelm II, Emperor of Germany, taken January 25th, 1906 by the NPG (Neue Photographische Gesellschaft) of Steglitz in Berlin. This postcard is labeled Series 1 No. 3.
The NPG opened their studio for color photography in 1905. This was likely the first such studio in the world. Many prominent residents of Berlin had their pictures taken in color. The pictures were taken by the well-known color separation method and printed by Robert Krayn's printing process. As more practical color photography methods become popular (mainly the Autochrome), the NPG stopped their early color photography. Translated excerpt from "Das Bild - Monatsschrift für photographische Kunst", Feb. 1906, detailing Wilhelm being photographed in color: "Portrait shots of the Emperor in colors. The excellent results which the three-color photography system N.P.G brought about in the field portrait photography that the Emperor now applied himself to this system to be recorded in colour. For this purpose, His Majesty went to Monbijou palace on the afternoon of January 25th, where the N.P.G improvised in a skylighted hall lit by daylight a studio with natural and electric light. Over a dozen color photographs were taken in a short span of time and among them were bust portraits as well as whole figures in a sitting and standing posture. For these photographs, the Kaiser had chosen a number of particularly colorful uniforms, which he repeatedly changed in order to test capabilities the N.P.G system. Despite the difficult conditions, all of the recordings were excellent and will are expected to be available for inspection in the N.P.G. showrooms as soon as possible." Januar 1906 von der NPG (Neue Photographische Gesellschaft) in Steglitz in Berlin. Diese Postkarte ist mit Serie 1 Nr. 3. gekennzeichnet. Die NPG eröffnete 1905 ihr Atelier für Dreifarbfotografie. Dies war wahrscheinlich das erste derartige Atelier der Welt. Viele prominente Bewohner Berlins ließen sich in Farbe fotografieren. Die Bilder wurden nach dem bekannten Dreifarbenfotografieverfahren aufgenommen und nach dem Verfahren von Robert Krayn gedruckt. G. bereits auf dem Gebiete der Porträtwiedergabe zeitigte, veranlassten den Kaiser sich nunmehr nach diesem System farbig aufnehmen zu lassen. Die Majestät begab sich zu diesem Zwecke am Nachmittag des 25. Januars nach dem Schlosse Monbijou, woselbst die Neue Photographische Gesellschaft in einem mit Oberlicht versehenen Saale ein Atelier improvisierte, das durch Tages- und elektrisches Licht beleuchtet wurde. Innerhalb einer kurzen Spanne Zeit wurden mehr als ein Dutzend Farbenaufnahmen gemacht, und befanden sich darunter sowohl Brustbilder, als auch ganze Figur in sitzender und stehender Haltung. Der Kaiser hatte für diese Aufnahmen einige besonders farbige Uniformen gewählt, die er wiederholt wechselte, um an deren Wiedergabe die Leistungsfähigkeit des Systems N. P. G. erkennen zu können. Sämtliche Aufnahmen sind trotz der schwierigen Verhältnisse vorzüglich gelungen und werden voraussichtlich in kürzester Zeit in den Ausstellungsräumen der N. P.
